I Like to Make Smoothies

As my Instagram followers already know, I have a thing abut smoothies. The lovely goodness that comes from a bowl or glass of freshly blended fruit is my idea of heaven. It’s something I got into about a year ago after seeing one on the Instagram feed of one of the people I regularly stalk. It looked amazing, delicious, creative and positively screamed make me. So I did and have been doing so ever since. Other than the fact that they taste great, I find it a creative challenge to concoct a pretty plate of food using just fruit, seeds and nuts, it’s fun. It also helps me and Miss E get our required 5 a day, coz you guessed right, she loves them too.

Smoothies and smoothie bowls are actually quite easy to make; the art is making it look complicated. You start with the base smoothie and I tend to pick the colour I want the smoothie to be then choose the fruits from there. I try to have a variety of fruits on hand at home. I use a mix of fresh and frozen fruit to make the smoothies. This cuts down on wastage of fruit and gives me a thicker consistency. I buy the fruit frozen but will also freeze fresh fruits like bananas and pineapples as needed. In terms of toppings, which is where the real creativity is; the world is your oyster. You can make it as complicated or as simple as you want. I tend to use a mix of fresh fruit, mixed nuts and seeds and desiccated coconut but I plan to try fruit and cacao powders and edible flowers soon.
