Writing My First Book
I’m trying to write a book. I’ve been trying to write a book for over 3 years. This mainly consisted of me saying I’m going to write a book then doing sod all about actually writing the book. But I think I’m really truly ready to write my book!
Ever since I started My Long Hair Journey I’ve been writing in some shape or form and it didn’t take me very long to realise that I wanted to write a book about hair. I didn’t however, want to write a how-to guide or hair care book and end up regurgitating the information so readily available on the internet. I eventually decided that fiction was the way to go and once I did, I started to get excited. I wanted to explore the hair issues every little black girl since forever has faced. I started visualising a bad ass hero who the 12 year old me would have loved reading about. Ideas started to flow and I quickly formulated a very basic plot and lead character, but then I got stuck again. Life happened, I got pregnant and writing quickly slipped downwards on my ever increasing list of priorities.
Fast forward to January this year when I firmly resolved to start working on my long neglected book. I finally realised that merely talking about it wasn’t going to get the job done. I’d literally been sitting around waiting for that mythical creature called ‘inspiration’ to call me back. And as every girl who’s sat by the phone waiting for it to ring knows, it rarely happens. So I did what I do best, I got online and started researching. I found the brilliant book ‘Take Off Your Pants!: Outline Your Books for faster, Better Writing’. It has completely changed the way I view the whole writing process. Using the book as a tool, I’ve been able to flesh out my characters and plot more thoroughly and I now have a solid outline to work with. All that’s left is for me to fill it in but then again, that is the part I’ve been putting off all along!
