Haircare Nightmare Documentary Update & Refunds

In 2018, I took part in a BBC News item regarding a study that was released highlighting the potential dangers of hair care products marketed at Black women. Following the overwhelming response I received as a result of that appearance, I decided that more needed to be done to raise awareness of the issue. My hope was to produce a documentary that would investigate the issue and provide answers and clear steps forward. To that end, I started a crowd funding campaign in September 2018 to raise funds for the documentary. The campaign raised £1685, well short of the £86,000 goal.

I also applied for additional grant funding but was ultimately unable to raise the necessary funds to create the My Hair Care Nightmare documentary. My new plan was to create a website and series of events designed to raise awareness and provide helpful resources. Unfortunately, 2020 happened and with it came the global COVID-19 pandemic.

What has become clear is that much has changed since I first began this journey. With more immediate health issues at the forefront of people’s concerns and the current constraints on my time, I no longer believe a website nor events to be the best way to meet people’s needs. To that end, I decided that the best way to move forward is to refund all contributions from the Indiegogo campaign. The subject matter is still dear to my heart and I’m working on other ways to provide information and support to people concerned about their products and the ingredients in them.

All contributors have been contacted accordingly. Any contributions which remain unclaimed by April 30th 2021 will be donated to Project Embrace, a community interest organisation that creates positive visual media representation of Afro textured hair and challenges the lack of and mis-representation of black women and their natural hair in the media, workplace and society at large.

I’d like to thank everyone for their support and patience, and I’m incredibly gutted that I was unable to make the documentary happen. If you have any questions, do contact me using the contact form.
